Tokyo University of Foreign Studies
It has been brought to our attention that the promotional materials for an event held by our university on the 19th of May contained inappropriate language. The event was promoted using the title “What we can do to prevent Japan's ?Latin Americanization?”, which lacks understanding and consideration for the region and its culture, and we sincerely apologize for the deep hurt it caused to many people.
As an institution that is responsible for education and research on the languages, cultures, and societies of various regions of the world, this should not have happened. Our university takes this incident seriously and we deeply regret having used such language.
We will learn from this incident and establish a system to more carefully check the appropriateness of the language and visual expressions used in future public relations and event management. We will also aim to deepen our understanding of diverse cultural backgrounds and raise awareness of the significance and impact of language in all of our educational activities moving forward.
Once again, we would like to offer our deepest apologies to the people of the region, all related parties, and all those who have placed their trust in our educational activities.
